Ford Focus - the fourth generation of the model submitted April 10, 2018 in Germany. In the new generation, the hatchback has become larger predecessor, received an increased wheelbase and design in a different concept. The most notable differences are the "inverted" grille and the rear pillars without small windows.
The new Focus is Ford's first car on the new C2 platform, designed to improve driver and passenger crash protection, optimize aerodynamic performance (to reduce fuel consumption), and make the cabin more spacious with relatively small external dimensions. As a result, the torsional rigidity of the body increased by 20%, and the vehicle weight decreased by up to 88 kg, depending on the modification.
The A-pillars have been moved back and now “aim” at the centers of the wheels, the new diode lights are divided into parts by the fifth door, and the model name is indicated in large letters directly under the “blue oval”, and not on the side and bottom as before.
The fourth generation Ford Focus has become 6 cm more spacious in the shoulders. The stock of space in the legs of the rear passengers increased by almost 5 cm. This is the merit of a wheelbase increased by 53 mm.
For cars with initial 1.0-liter gasoline engines and 1.5-liter diesel engines, Ford provided a lightweight torsion beam rear suspension. More powerful versions are equipped with a multi-link suspension SLA (Short Long Arm), mounted on a subframe with multi-component mounting bushings, the rigidity of which varies depending on the direction of the applied force and its magnitude. According to the manufacturer, the model received a more "driver" character and at the same time began to transmit less vibration and noise to the cabin. And for all cars with a rear multi-link, a system for changing the stiffness of shock absorbers (Continuously Controlled Damping, CCD) will be available, which analyzes road conditions every 20 milliseconds.
The European range includes exclusively turbocharged engines: 1.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline engines (85, 100 and 125 hp) with the function of shutting off one cylinder at low loads and 1.5 liters (150 and 182 hp), as well as EcoBlue diesel engines with a volume of 1.5 l (95 and 120 hp) and 2.0 l (150 hp). They are combined with a six-speed “mechanics” and a new 8-speed “automatic”, which adapts to the driving style and traffic conditions. Moreover, Ford decided to replace the traditional automatic transmission selector with a compact “twist”, similar to those installed in Jaguar Land Rover cars.
Senior Ford Focus trims are equipped with a Sync 3 multimedia system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto applications. The list of additional options includes a Bang & Olufsen audio system with ten speakers and wireless charging for smartphones.
Serious work has been done in the direction of active safety. The new systems and assistants are combined into the Ford Co-Pilot360 package, which includes adaptive cruise control with automatic stop and resume function, traffic sign recognition and lane keeping system. In addition, the Focus is available with an adaptive lighting system with improved cornering “illumination”, a collision warning system, blind spot sensors, a wide-angle rear-view camera with dynamic guides and an Active Park Assist 2 car park, which is trained to independently perform parallel and perpendicular parking. Finally, in the fourth generation Ford Focus has acquired an optional projection display.
