Ford Focus RS - the third generation of the "charged" Focus was presented in February 2016. For the first time in the history of the family, the hot hatch has become a global model, intended for Europe, the USA, China and other markets. The car was developed by specialists from the sports division of Ford Performance with the participation of the famous racing driver Ken Block.
"ERS" cannot be confused with other Ford Focus, including the sports version ST. The hot hatch got the original front bumper with a splitter and a higher location for the license plate area, an enlarged grille, and RS design fog lights. In addition, a large spoiler is installed above the tailgate, and two pipes of a sports exhaust system with an electronically controlled valve are spaced along the edges of the diffuser of the rear bumper, which changes the volume and tone depending on the engine speed. The Focus RS comes standard with 19-inch 20-spoke alloy wheels and low-profile 235/35R19 tires.
The character of the five-door gives out the interior design. The Focus RS package includes: Recaro sports seats with developed lateral support, a truncated steering wheel, metal pedals and front door sills and a leather-wrapped gear lever. Inside, black color dominates, however, leather-covered elements (seat sides, steering wheel, armrest, gear lever, etc.) are stitched with a blue thread. In addition to this, sensors for boost pressure, temperature and oil pressure are installed in the center of the front panel.
Hidden under the hood of the Ford Focus RS is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo four based on the Ford Mustang powertrain. Engine power reaches 350 hp. (at 6000 rpm), the maximum torque is 440 Nm (at 2000-4500 rpm), and in the mode of a short-term increase in thrust, the “torque” increases to 470 Nm. The turbocharged engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 4.7 seconds and top speed is limited to 266 km/h.
Another feature of the Focus RS is Ford Performance AWD with Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control. Instead of a rear differential, electronically controlled multi-plate clutches are installed on each axle shaft. They redistribute the torque available to the rear axle between the wheels depending on the road surface and driving conditions. At the same time, data from numerous sensors is updated at a frequency of 100 times per second.
The driver has access to launch control and driving modes Normal, Sport, Track and Drift. Each of them affects the setting of the all-wheel drive system, ESP, steering sharpness, reaction time to pressing the gas pedal and the sound of the power unit. Moreover, the “drift mode” is configured in such a way that even a driver without training can master a controlled skid. But the shock absorber settings can be adjusted separately from the general ones in the “street” and “track” ranges.
Already in the basic equipment, the Ford Focus RS is equipped with bi-xenon headlights and taillights with LED elements, keyless entry and engine start with a button, heated steering wheel and front seats, as well as a media system with an 8-inch display and 9 speakers.
